Tanhaji (2020)

Movie: Tanhaji (2020)
Genre: Historical period drama
Runtime: 2hr 15mins
Writer and director: Om Raut

Tanhaji, a 17th-century marathi army leader of Chhatrapati Shivaji attempts to recapture the Kondhana fortress once it passes on to the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb who handovers its control to his dependable guard Udaybhan Singh Rathore.

Ajay Devgan as Tanaji Malusare dictates most of the screen time in the film and he breathed into the character. His onscreen chemistry with Kajol was in perfect sync and she is good in her role, which is limited. Saif Ali Khan as Udaybhan Singh Rathore has done good job; this would be his best performances in recent years. But one will compare his role with Alauddin Khilji played by Ranveer Singh from Padmaavat. Rest of the cast was ok as they hardly make impact.

From beginning director Om Raut makes clear impact and narrates the story in perfect and snappish manner. Screenplay was good and story never gets deviates. Technically the movie was pretty respectable whether it is Keiko Nakahara’s cinematography or the Dharmendra Sharma’s editing or Sandeep Shirodkar’s background score. Visual effects give added grandeur to the movie; action in the movie was commendable. 3D effects were ok as they are hardly noticeable. Production values and art work were wholesome, makes movie rich in every aspect.

Film was based on real life events, makers made it fictionalized to suite commercial format. Despite its historical liberties, the stunning visual effects and grand war scenes makes movie appreciable. On flip side film gets predictable at times and most of the cast lack characterisation. However its crisp running time, point blank narration, and great performances are major plus points of the movie.

Please watch it on big screen for better experience. Avoid piracy.
