Mahanati (2018)
My View
Movie: Mahanati (2018)
Genre:Biographical Period film
Runtime:2 hr 57 minutes
This film was based on life story of south Indian superstar Savitri, that is viewed from Madhuravani (journalist) point of view.
Actress Savitri started her career at the age of 14. She achieved stardom after acting in Mayabazar (1957) and rest is history. She ruled telugu and tamil industry for more than a decade which made her first lady superstar in south. Her marriage with Gemini Ganesan was great initially and later ran into trouble due to personal differences. In her last days she was addicted to alcohol and also faced financial difficulties. Slowly her health started deteriorating and she went into diabetic coma later, she passed away in 1981. After 40 years someone from our telugu industry has guts to take a biopic on her life and should be appreciated for there brave attempt.
Nag Ashvin, the director and his team of Mahanati has done extensive research on her life and tried to portray her in most natural way. Direction was extraordinary, the way he narrated her story without missing the emotion was outstanding. He was very well supported by Siddhaarth Sivasamy’s screenplay. Dialogues by Sai Madhav Burra were simple yet effective. Music and background score by Mickey J Meyer was classic and believe me songs will remembered for years. Who will believe that camerawork was done by a Hollywood technician, Dani Sanchez-Lopez. The way he used lighting and grading was perfect. Its difficult for a foreigner to understand telugu nativity and replicate the same in black and white, he truly succeeded in it. The artists, costumes, make up, editing and minute detailing in the art work was simply superb. Production values are apt.
Keerthy suresh was perfect pick to portray legendary Savitri and she has done fabulous job. In few black & white scenes she almost resembled actress Savitri. Dulquer salmaan suited well as Gemini Ganesan and he did complete justice to the role. Samanta as Madhuravani scores well and she was well supported by Vijay Deverakonda. Rajendra Prasad acted as Savitri's paternal uncleand he is blessed to get such a role. Rest of the cast and guest appearances were apt.
Telugu film industry is changing and as an audience we should encourage such changes. Mahanati was a great movie which will be remembered, if I am not exaggerating it will remain as a one of the classics of all time. Don’t miss it.
