Parasite (2019) - Korean Movie

Movie: Parasite (2019)
Language: Korean
Genre: Drama / Dark comedy / Thriller
Runtime: 2hr 12min
Writer and director: Bong Joon-ho

Parasite is a 2019 South Korean dark comedy thriller directed by Bong Joon-ho. Film deals with greed and class discrimination as well as symbiotic connection between the wealthy Park family and the poor Kim family. Kim’s family members are smart manipulators who infiltrates into Parks’s household as tutor, artist, driver and house made; they pose themselves as highly qualified individuals which is untrue. On the other hand Parks family gets totally benefited from their work. This film is visualized as reflection of contemporary capitalism.

Highlights are
  •          Artistic montage scenes of each character of Kim’s family entering into Parks house.
  •      The surprise to the Kim’s family when they are relishing the luxuries at Parks house.
  •      Pre Climax scene where Kim notices the true colour of his owner, Mr. Park and needless to say director and his team designed the scene in extraordinary manner.

It is noticeable that the director smartly and wisely uses
  •        Staircases to portray the positions of the Kim and Park families.
  •      Spaces in their houses showcase their togetherness; like rich families have huge space but they lack togetherness whereas the poor live in compact spaces with togetherness. But later are economically backward can lead to greediness and unpredicted troubles.

According to director Bong the film's title "Parasite" has a dual meaning and has two-way relationship, as the story is about the Kim family intruding and creeping into the rich house, considering poor family as Parasites. However, on the other hand the Park family are also considered as parasites in terms of labour. They can't even wash dishes, they can't drive themselves, and so they leech off the poor family's labour.

Technically movie was top class. On the whole Parasite has a skilfully layered theme with class clash and social inequality; surprising twists, drama and humour makes it worth watching. Climax looks more natural and realistic.

Watch it for its sheer brilliance in story telling and moral within it.

(Note: I watched the movie in Inox, Vizag with English subtitles; Movie was nominated for six Oscars)
